Colchicine and indomethacin, which your doc probably gave you, are usually quite good at alleviating the pain once you have it, and allopurinol, taken daily, can prevent it to some extent. You also need to watch that your diet doesn't include things that aggravate gout, which is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals (they're sharp and pointy) near nerves and other sensitive tissue in the joints (any joint can be affected, not just the typical big toe). This excess uric acid can be caused by a genetic inability to efficiently remove it from the body, or excess ingestion of precursors to uric acid, which is mainly meat. Yes, good old meat, especially seafood, juicy and tasty, but it contains tons of DNA, of which purines (guanine and adenosine) eventually get digested and processed into uric acid. So if you can lower the protein content of your diet somewhat, and avoid alcohol (which causes uric acid to precipitate out of blood), then you may find you have less frequent gout attacks.

Cold packs at 10-20 minute intervals will help with the inflammation. Drinking more clear fluids (water) would definitely help your body get rid of some of that uric acid build up that is being deposited at your joints.

And there is this pain spray that works wonders for the joints made by a company in California. It is greaseless, stainless, and no side-effects. Works wonders for arthritis, gout, and painful joints.I'll try to find the website and come back to this question if I can.

I've heard that drinking cherry juice helps, also exercise and avoiding alcohol and eating properly.
